Johannes Kip was a Dutch draftsman, engraver, and print seller who followed King William and Queen Mary from Holland to England after the Glorious Revolution of 1688. During the reign of Queen Anne, he recorded birds’ eye views of 80 British estates with draftsman Leonard Knyff. Their Britannia Illustrata: Or Views of Several of the Queens Palaces, as Also of the Principal seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain, Curiously Engraven on 80 Copper Plates was published in London in 1708–9. Kip’s and Knyff’s views were incredibly accurate depictions of British estates, especially considering that they did not have the advantage of a hot-air balloon to capture aerial perspectives. Published as black and white engravings, Kip views in the Colonial. Williamsburg collection have been reimagined in color and given a painterly interpretation by the Paul Montgomery studio. The inaugural WILLIAMSBURG Mural Collection X Paul Montgomery re-envisions the rich design archive of Colonial Williamsburg the world's largest living history museum, within a modern sensibility.
