FAQs
- Questions about Murals and Artwork
- Can designs be customized?
- The designs of each mural are set as they were originally hand-painted, meaning customization in post is difficult if not impossible. For extensive customizations, we direct customers to our hand-painted company, Paul Montgomery Studio. Hand-painted murals can be completely customized to be exactly what you’d like.
- Can a mural be recolored?
- The coloring of a mural can potentially be changed depending on the mural and the complexity of the artwork. Please contact us regarding your desired change, and we will check feasibility. If possible, doing the change will incur a custom color service. This service will include the design time to make the change, and a large sample for in person approval of the new color.
- Can you do a custom mural? Can I provide artwork for you to print?
- The Mural Source is an official and dedicated outlet for printed recreations of original artwork by Paul Montgomery Studio. Artwork printed by The Mural Source is limited to designs from that library.
- For all custom inquiries, please contact Paul Montgomery Studio about hand-painting the perfect mural for your project.
- Questions about ordering a mural
- What material should I get my mural printed on?
- We offer a range of substrates per mural that provide the best look and performance for each project. Some materials are limited to specific murals, so please check your desired mural to see what options are available.
- For information about specific materials, please visit our materials page here. [Link to materials page].
- How do I pick a panel size? What is ‘Design Height’?
- When choosing the best panel size, choose the height that will safely cover your wall without being too tall or too short. Typically, panels should be 4” or taller than your wall height for a safe install. If your margin is less than this, speak with your installer about their comfort level, or size up to the next available panel size.
- Panel sizes are specific to each mural based on how they were originally hand-painted, so please check your desired mural to see the height options available.
- What is panel type? What is a ‘Header/Footer’?
- A cost saving feature that we offer is the ability to use smaller panels on openings where a full panel would be wasted. These smaller panels are called ‘Headers’ when above an opening and ‘Footer’ when below an opening.
- Headers and Footers are both smaller, square panels taken from the tops and bottoms of panels respectively. Headers are square because they are as tall as they are wide, changing proportionately with the panel size. Check your ideal panel size to plan for any possible headers or footers.
- How do I measure my walls for a mural?
- Measuring for a mural is slightly different than measuring for repeat wallpaper. Instead of measuring for square footage, you’re measuring to see how many panels you’ll need. For specific instructions, see our measuring guide here. [Link]
- How do I determine how many panels I need?
- After measuring your walls and determining the best panel size, you’ll take the shown panel width that pairs with the correct panel height, and use that to find the number of panels you need. For a quick estimate, you can take the total perimeter of your room and divide it by the panel width to see the number of panels it will take to cover that distance. It’s important to round up, not down, to the next whole number to ensure you have enough panels for full coverage.
- What if I need more panels after I order?
- Panels are printed for an order in a single run to ensure that the color is consistent throughout. Having panels produced after this original run can cause issues with slight color discrepancies from the original lot. If you are in need of more panels, please contact us with your previous order number and project specifications so we can determine if more panels are possible. We will work with you to determine the best solution.
- What if I need more panels than the mural has?
- All of our murals are infinitely repeating, meaning the last panel will go back into the first for an infinite loop. If you need more panels than what the mural has available, you can continue the mural again until you have enough panels to cover your project. You are not required to start with panel 1, so use the best configuration to minimize visible repetition of the mural in your room.
- What is the lead time on a mural?
- Murals are typically produced 5 weeks after your order has been placed. In some cases, we can produce a mural sooner if required. In such cases, please contact us to see if it will be possible to meet your deadline. Rush charges may apply.
- Can I see the mural in my room before I order?
- We offer a Design Diagram service which allows us to recreate your room in 2D and lay the mural out panel-by-panel. In doing this, we can arrange panels to put a certain scene on a focal wall, as well as accommodate where artwork lands in relation to obstructions.
- To learn more about the process and to inquire, visit our page about the diagram service here. [LINK]
- How do you ship?
- We ship all orders via FedEx from our facility in Staunton, Virginia. Murals will be shipped in a long box with ample packaging for safe travel. Orders within the continental U.S. will be shipped FedEx Ground unless otherwise denoted.
- International orders will ship via FedEx International, adhering to rules and regulations of the destination country. International orders may be subject to shipping costs and VAT. Contact us with your delivery address for a shipping quote.
- Questions about Install
- How will the paper arrive, and what needs to be done to prepare?
- Murals ship as a roll, with each panel being rolled together. Panels will need to be trimmed off of the roll, removing excess paper to prepare the panel. On the right side of the panel will be a half-inch of bleed that can be removed before install, or used to double cut the paper on the wall. The paper is not prepasted, and paste will need to be used for installation.
- What paste should I use?
- Our paper works well with all mid-strength and stronger paste. While not a requirement to use, The Mural Source has had success with Romans PRO-880 applied with a roller and booked for about 2 minutes. This paste, or similar from other brands, should make for a safe application.
- Where should I cut?
- Begin by cutting the panel away from the white that remains on the roll. After cutting the panel away, leaving only artwork, there remains a half-inch of bleed on the right of the panel. Bleed is a portion of the artwork from the next panel to assist with lining up artwork.
- This bleed can either be cut off at this stage, allowing for a “butt fit” installation, or can be cut off once the panel is on the wall. If it remains when the panel is on the wall, overlap the bleed with the next panel so the artwork flows as it should. Then, cut along this overlapped area, known as “double-cut”, and remove the strips of paper. This should leave you with a clean and near-invisible seam.
- Questions about Sampling
- What do the samples show?
- Samples are small portions of the mural meant to show coloring and finish. Samples come in two sizes, 10”x13” and 24”x36”, and are designed to show the most important colors of the mural for reference.
- Samples can be ordered in the colorway of your choosing, and on the material you plan to use in your project. This will provide the best preview of your mural.
- It is recommended that you temporarily hang the sample on your wall to see how it looks in your room’s lighting. You can also move it to other areas of the room if there are windows, to see how natural lighting at different times of the day affects appearance.
- Can I get a sample of a specific part of the mural?
- Unlike murals themselves, samples are typically stocked at our facility for quick shipping times. This means the artwork of purchasable samples are predetermined to show the best part of the mural possible for color range.
- For specific sample requests, please contact us. All sample accommodations will involve the purchase of a large sample for maximum visibility.
