Indian mordant-painted and dyed textiles were among the first Asian textiles to reach Europe as East-West trade opened in the 17th century. These patterned chintzes, which we have based our Palampore mural on, were incredibly popular. Their success threatened the British woolen industry, which petitioned to have Indian chintz curtains and bed hangings prohibted in Great Britain.
