Indian mordant-painted and dyed textiles were among the first Asian textiles to reach Europe as East-West trade opened in the 17th century. These patterned “chintzes” were incredibly novel and popular. Their success threatened the British woolen industry, which petitioned to have Indian chintz curtains and bed hangings prohibited in Great Britain. Ironically, these stunning and luxurious textiles could be re-exported to the colonies. Lord Botetourt, royal governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770, enjoyed chintz bed hangings in his chamber. The inaugural WILLIAMSBURG Mural Collection X Paul Montgomery re-envisions the rich design archive of Colonial Williamsburg the world's largest living history museum, within a modern sensibility. Sales of WILLIAMSBURG products support Colonial Williamsburg's missions of education, preservation, and engaged citizenship – “That the future may learn from the past.”
